Do you believe in the evolution of human consciousness?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for July 18, 2008:
Yes I do.
Consider the change that occurred in the thinking of people when they realized the earth wasn't flat.
And then when they realized the earth travels around the sun, unlike what their Bibles told them. (Believe it or not, National Science Foundation studies since the 80's reveal people still believe the sun moves around the earth. Like, 1 in 5 people.)
Then when they realized what atomic energy was, and that you could send your voice over a wire, and never mind all the recent discoveries of the brain.
And it may shock you, but we still have no idea what all the species are that inhabit this earth. And I love watching What the Bleep?!*#!! because it begins to reveal the effect consciousness has on us, and how our brain can operate, and that little particles disappear from our world, and others appear. And this very second, there are sub-atomic particles that pass right through us on their way to who only knows where.
And what of feminism, and civil rights? Those were both laughed at, and now we have higher levels of equality than before. Note the time it took to get from slavery to now as an indication of how long it takes consciosness for our species to evolve. In several issues, like stem cell research, gay rights, marriage, the basis of law, and war, there are those who want to stay stuck in the past.
At every turn of knowledge, we learn our world is not what we thought, particualrly if our world view is shaped by a dogmatic religion. And so consciousness makes an evolution to repsond to this new level of learning.
And today we have teachers like Tolle and Dyer that are teaching us not necessarily what is new, but maybe new to us. It is time for their voices to be heard by many, much in the same way that Buddhism's fastest growing region is the West, and that Buddhists views and practices are greatly enhancing what scientists are learning about the brain and consciousness.
