What is the role of art in the world?

This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for July 01, 2008:
Her's a poem I wrote for an art exibit promoting Sui Generis, an art project here where I live.
OH, RATS
Stool pigeon, rat fink,
Stab in the back,
The sight of a tail
Slippin’ through a crack.
There’s Splinter, and Willard,
The mighty rats of NIMH,
“You dirty rat,” don’t forget,
Charlotte’s friend Templeton.
They gave us the plague,
Or so we like to think,
We know they leave their shit
Under our sink.
Scientists tell us
They are social, clean
And smart.
Still we don’t take their image
to our heart.
Scoundrel, wretch, rogue,
Thesaurus says weasel.
Not often the subject we find
On the easel.
But here we find ourselves
Looking at rats
That don’t adorn our
Shoes, belts, or hats.
But how ingenious, how clever,
This cultural disguise.
After all, isn’t art
About opening our eyes?
